  •         Unplug

Unplug seldom used appliances like an extra refrigerator in the basement. Every house is full of plastic power supplies to charge cell phones, digital cameras and other personal gadgets; keep them all unplugged when not in use. Home theater equipment, stereos, washing machines and dryers can be equivalent to a 75 or 100 watt light bulb running continuously if no unplugged.

  •       Computers

Enable the sleep mode feature in your computer, it will use less power during periods of inactivity. Configure your computer to hibernate after 30 minutes. The hibernate mode turns the computer off, it doesn’t require you to reload everything when you switch it back on.

  •      Temperature control

In winter set your thermostat to 68 degrees or less during daytime and to 55 degrees before going to sleep or when you’re away during daytime. During summertime, leave shaves and blind closed when the air conditioner is in use. Set the thermostat on your water heater between 120 and 130 degrees, lower temperature can save more energy.

  •        Efficient use of appliances
  1. Your refrigerators should be set between 38 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit, freezer should be between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Use the power save switch if your fridge has one, doors should be sealed tightly.
  2. Don’t preheat or peek inside the oven more than necessary. Check the oven’s door seal, use the microwave oven for reheating or cooking small items.
  3. Wash full loads in your dishwasher using short cycles, dirtiest dishes uses longer cycles. Water and energy are saved in pumping and heating it. Air drying can also save energy use.
  4. In your washing machine set the proper water level for the size of the load. Wash in cold water when practical and always rinse in cold water.
  5. After each use, clean the lint filter in the dryer. Dry heavy and light fabrics separately, don’t add wet items to a load that is partly dry.
  •         Switch off the lights

Don’t forget to flick the switch when you leave a room. In the office, turn out or dim lights in the conference room and when you step out during lunch break. A commercial building uses more lighting than anything else.
